Bessemer's Washington School 2009

 

Master Gardener Gordon Frase  speaks to Mrs. Beals'  4th grade class at Washington School in Bessemer, MI , Goron tells the students what plants need in order to grow. In other photos, Master Gardeners are helping students plant Marigolds and Petunia seeds.  Later this spring the fourth graders will transplant their flowers outdoors.
 
above left the class listens attentively to Michigan Master Gardener Gordon Frese describe what the students will be planting and how to read and use the information contained on the see packets. Mrs. Beals has been covering farming issue in her classes studies of the Aztecs.

Students were taught how to fill the seed trays properly and proper planting techniques of the seeds.

The students will tend the plants in their class room till the end of May. Then master gardeners return to help the students plant the flowers outside. During the course of the summer, students, with the help of Range Master Gardeners water and deadhead the flowers.
Once the seeds are planted and covered with potting mix the students watered the plants and placed covers on the seed trays. The Trays will remain covered until the seedlings first emerge.

During the summer months student volunteers return to the project to water plants and remove weeds.
